Schedule of Public Involvement Meetings
for the
Fort Monroe "Section 106" ProcessThe name refers to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their undertakings on historic properties. The Section 106 process will lead to a "programmatic agreement" that will substantially influence and guide the planning that Virginia is carrying out through the Fort Monroe Authority (the Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority, or "FMFADA").
Participation in the 106 process by Fort Monroe's true friends is crucial, and Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park believes the most important point to make is this: In fashioning Fort Monroe's future, we must respect the fact that all of Fort Monroe, not just the moated fortress, is a National Historic Landmark.
For the public involvement meetings, it is also important to make sure that there is pro-Fort Monroe, anti-inappropriate-development turnout at all four locations. (Note: The 106 process is not about development, just as the Army says -- but it is about the rules for any development that Hampton and the Kaine administration might decide to plan.) Who can you call in Hampton, Norfolk, Richmond and Washington?
