Myth 9: Hampton is mainly interested in preserving FM, not in profiting from it:
Reality: Hampton's actions regarding Fort Monroe indicate that profit is the city's chief motive.
In addition to its development plans, another confirmation of Hampton's single-minded pursuit of Fort Monroe is its recent hiring of a full-time lobbyist. According to
29 November 06 Daily Press article, the lobbyist's primary concern will be the post: "At the top of the city's wish list, however, is a bill concerning the future of the Fort Monroe Army post that didn't even make it to the floor of the House of Delegates for discussion last year. That bill would allow-but not require-Gov. Timothy M. Kaine to turn over the state's property on the 570-acre waterfront post to a local panel recognized by the Department of Defense."(Home)
