Starting in September 2005, before Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park was formed, CFMNP Communications Vice President Steve Corneliussen commented extensively in op-ed essays about what he called the attempt simply to "donate" Fort Monroe for one city's economic gain instead of treating that "national treasure" as a long-term strategic asset for Tidewater, for Virginia and for the nation:
